REVIEWED: "Seduction," by Wonderland.
Type: Missing Scene from Window of Opportunity. In this case, we're presented with one of the time loops.
On the technical side -- there's the author's penchant for "telling" not "showing." She(or he) does not give us the background information on the reason for thoughts, events, and actions. We're just told information. The story is written in the first person, told by someone named Jack. That's about as close to Jack O'Neill's true characterization as you're going to get.
I don't care for first-person stories as a general rule and I'm reminded why by this story. There aren't many people who can make me believe I'm reading Jack or Daniel, or whomever the 1st person is. They invariably fuck up the characterization so badly that, depending on the writer, I could be reading either the Marquis De Sade, Mary Poppins or George Bush. Usually, I'll find this out about a 3rd of the way through the story. In this story, you find out halfway down the first page.
Jack is characterized as a 'conditional gay,' meaning that he's gay-for-Daniel in the same way porn actors are gay-for-pay. There are a lot of authors out there who write this way, deciding that Jack can be gay but only for Daniel (and vice-versa). But Wonderland is different in that her gay-for-Daniel story starts and ends at Jack's libido. All he wants to do is fuck him. There is no love here.
Jack is filled with ignorance about himself, gay men, and gay sex. And the worst stereotypes about self-loathing closeted gays is presented here in detail. We're presented with a Jack O'Neill who is a self-serving narcissist and a man suffering from borderline personality disorder. He's a man who hates the thought of being gay and doesn't seem to like Daniel very much either, except for thoughts about having sex with him, both before, during, and after the event. Jack attitude and demeanor are those of a date rapist. He uses his position as dominating leader of SG-1 to coerce Daniel into having sex with him.
As for Daniel... well, we have someone named Daniel. He has no balls, knowledge, confidence, or any of the usual personality traits we've seen in the real Daniel Jackson. He is in this fic only to serve Jack's urges.
The Story -- The fic begins with Jack blaming Daniel for everything that's gone wrong (cliché #1), most especially his sexual attraction to him. There aren't any other personal feelings here and Jack doesn't admit that he's gay. He just wants to fuck Daniel's ass as some sort of kinky game, like straight phobes think it's okay to rape a gay man.
"If he hadn't tried to teach me Latin by showing me books with some very bizarre illustrations, if he hadn't said that we could do anything, anything, and not suffer the consequences. And especially if he hadn't made that remark about me reading Carter's report, with that expression that makes those blue eyes dance with mischief. So I'm blaming him totally for the fact that I am seriously considering banging him during the very next loop."
Next thing we read is a glaring example of ignorance:
"Let me just say that guys do not go around thinking, much less saying, how attractive other guys are."
This defines precisely who Jack is: a repressed homophobe making excuses. Gay men have no trouble at all thinking about men, and most don't have any trouble commenting, and then acting, on their attractions to other Gay men.
In the next line, we have this bizarre, disturbing observation:
"But I have to confess that if this weren't a military base with a camera in every corner, his ass would have more handprints on it than an Italian miniskirt."
First, there's sexual harassment. Second, Daniel is being compared to a woman. Third, Jack makes this comment as if Daniel has no say in the matter.
We soon find out that Daniel has no experience with men-just as Jack doesn't. Yet Jack seems to think that with a little "seduction" plan, he could easily have Daniel capitulating to his sexual demands? This statement and others prove that Jack is a predator. I'm supposed to be endeared by this, according to the writer, but I'm not. Neanderthal!Jack is not someone to desire. Alpha Jack is.
Moving along, Jack refers to Daniel's education and career as a 'thing.' So we then have cliché #2, the dismissal of Daniel's intelligence. We're not even past page 1 and Jack's thinking that he needs to have a "plan of attack" where he can drag Daniel off to a VIP room and then "convince" him that "this is something he needs to try." Ah huh. Last time I checked, sex wasn't nouveau cuisine or a faddish sport.
Anyway. Jack plans on trapping Daniel into indulging his 'down lo' attitude. For anyone not familiar with what that means, it's a term used by men (usually black men, but ethnicity isn't a prerequisite) who fuck other men 'on the side' but never, ever openly. They won't admit they're bisexual or gay. They just like fucking men. So in this case, as stated when I mentioned gay-for-Daniel, Jack's not gay. He just wants to fuck Daniel. And it's apparent that it's a trophy thing. The notch on the bed post.
After thinking about his plan, Jack then adds, "and if none of that works, I'm probably just gonna throw him on the bed and ravish him." This is the author inserting herself into the story. Generally, only women with a penchant for romance novels use 'ravish.' There is no way a man, like the Jack written here, would even think the word 'ravish' never mind be caught dead saying it out loud.
There's more internal stupidity going on where Jack plans on getting rid of Teal'c during the loop so he won't be interrupted while he's "trying to get some action of the definitely strange kind." Jack also thinks very little of Teal'c. He can't make up his mind if Teal'c would stop him or join him if he found out, all because Teal'c "adores" Daniel. Jack then thinks, "And let me tell you, I've seen Teal'c in the shower and I wouldn't want that coming anywhere near me! Just the thought of it hurts."
That? So Jack's afraid of Teal'c's 'That'. ::sighs:: Hints of homophobic racism aside, we then have a contradiction in the next paragraph. Jack apparently believes that fucking a guy is no different than fucking a woman. Just "get them excited to the point that they can't think and you're pretty much home." So... he likes them mentally incapacitated. Again, a date rapist mentality, someone who doesn't care who he hurts just so long as he can get off. It obviously contradicts the homophobia so far, doesn't it?
So, on to the seduction. Jack brings Daniel to the VIP room under false pretenses. He's setting his trap. Inside the room, Daniel asks what's going on and Jack says he wants to talk. This is supposed to be a red flag since Jack O'Neill apparently doesn't talk. I'm led to believe he can't form complete sentences.
We get more of the telling, not showing, when Jack says(narrates) he's supplied the room with clean sheets, which would be there anyway, but this author apparently thinks the military doesn't do housekeeping. He's stocked the bathroom(but with what, we don't know), and stolen a bunch of lube(and from somewhere we don't know).
And on the bed are books belonging to Daniel which Jack has stolen from his office. By the description, they're Gay Sex books(we don't know the titles). So here's the contradiction: If Daniel is supposed to be straight, what's he doing with these books? It isn't because he's an anthropologist. Those books would about cultural differences, perhaps getting into the diversity of sexual practices and taboos, but he would not have specific 'how to' books on gay sex unless he were delving into his own sexuality-and then those books would be in his apartment, not in his office for Jack to snoop through.
So, Daniel sees the books and once more, Jack lies about them. He tells Daniel he's just curious, doing some research. Posits the supposition that they could gate to a "gay" planet some day so they should know "how to behave." Yes, because gay men are such aliens, aren't they? To further his point, Jack asks Daniel what they'd do if they gated to Planet Gay and were asked to engage in sex with the natives. Daniel the uneducated, oblivious twat says, "I don't know," and "That's never happened."
Jack tells Daniel that learning how to have gay sex is no different than any standard mission prep and adds that if he had to fuck a guy, he'd rather it be Daniel. He couldn't possibly fuck Teal'c. He then says out loud what we've already heard him plod on about earlier: "Have you seen the size of that thing?" So, we have two things here. 1. Jack's willing to do what's necessary to coerce Daniel into letting him fuck him, but he can't bring himself to say dick or cock. "That thing" is all he manages, even to himself. 2. Jack's automatically assuming that he'd be the one getting fucked by Teal'c because Teal'c's dick is bigger than his. Which apparently to Jack is the deciding factor as to who tops and who bottoms. Talk about perpetuating a sexist lie.
Daniel displays it, too. His reaction is to choke and turn red at the thought of getting fucked by Teal'c. Jack then contradicts himself with another lie, telling Daniel that the only reason he's thinking about having sex with him is because over the (time)loops, he's had too much to think about and he's tired of thinking. This makes no sense, but it's apparently his seduction method to get Daniel to acquiesce. And for some reason, it sort of works. He's got Daniel utterly confused by this point, which was Jack's aim. So Daniel is obviously someone who is easily confused, despite evidence to the contrary outside of this story.
[ At this point, I'm asking myself: What makes the author think this is even remotely believable, that the reader isn't laughing their ass off or getting offended by the rampant ignorance and homophobia? ]
So, after another argument about needing to practice fucking men just in case they need to do it off-world, Jack takes Daniel's glasses, catching him off-guard to confuse him yet again, then proceeds to shock him with a series of quick, forceful kisses. Then we have this jewel from Jack's mind:
"He opens his mouth, whether to protest or invite me in, I don't know."
Jack doesn't know. Yet another example of the insensitivity to other people's feelings, and a reminder, for me, that he's a predator. While Jack is warming up with the kissing, Daniel(of course) freezes up. But he's not resisting or protesting, just not kissing back. And since Daniel's not protesting, Jack decides this is a domination/submission situation, "Taking that as submission, I angle the kiss and thrust my tongue roughly into his mouth."
Jack maneuvers him to the bed and Daniel "obediently" goes, turning Jack on in the process. He thinks about losing control, to just "shove him down and pummel him right now." At first, I thought the author fucked up and chose the wrong verb, but a few seconds later, I realized that given the fact that this Jack doesn't know the difference between assault and sex, 'pummel' is sadly accurate.
Moving on. Jack gets Daniel naked and while he's still clothed, jerks him off till Daniel comes. And Daniel apologizes after, as if he's done something wrong. Jack, the magnanimous fool he is, says there's nothing to apologize for. He goes to clean up, comes back with a stack of towels(we don't learn why he comes back with a 'stack' of them). He uses one towel to both clean Daniel up (Daniel can't do it himself) and get him hard again. Apparently the friction of the towel and the way Jack cleans his cock is enough Daniel get hard again. And because he's getting hard again, Jack then says something mysteriously stupid. He tells Daniel to slow down. *He* tells Daniel to slow down.
Jack strips, and when he drops his shorts, Modest Baby Daniel looks away. The author then has Jack contradicting himself yet again. Either that or he's seriously fucked up about what 'going slow' means.
"I don't call him on it; he needs to move at his own pace. And this next move may take awhile. I grab the lube and lay in on the nightstand. I know what it's for and what I have to do with it to prepare him; the Internet is a helluva place to learn about sex, but that's what I did. And even though I'm almost as excited as he is, I have to remember that, for all intents and purposes, he is still a virgin. We both are, when it comes to this kind of sex. And that excites me even more, knowing I'll be the first."
Jack refers to foreplay as a "move," and we have Daniel 'allowed' to move at his own pace--except that Jack brings over the lube, so he's not going to move at his own pace. If he were allowed to do that, the action would stop altogether. There's a contradiction here as well as flagrant insensitivity. We have Jack "almost" as excited as Daniel, yet he can't wait to deflower his virgin, and while Jack notes that Daniel's not ready, he's getting the lube anyway.
On with the false foreplay, Jack lubes his finger and sticks it in Daniel's ass. From only *one* finger, Daniel's flinching from implied pain. Two fingers go in and it's more painful. Is Jack stopping at all? Nope. He's damn near coming, this turns him on so much.
"I know this has to hurt like hell," Jack is thinking. Ah huh. Fingers(or cocks, for that matter) don't hurt unless you're using them wrong. This is quite possible, given who this Jack is, but we're led to believe that it's simply because Jack's finger is up Daniel's ass. The author is of the mind that anything inside the ass has got to hurt like hell, lubed or not. The reality is that it doesn't. It feels good. Daniel should be moaning and asking for more, but he's not because he does *not* want to be there.
But is Daniel protesting? Nope. So because he hasn't said no, people will argue this isn't rape. But what Jack is doing is an abuse of authority. Daniel is depicted as someone incapable of saying no, and one could argue he's too afraid to say it. He takes his direction from Jack; gets hard when he says, relaxes when he says, feels a little pleasure when he says. Why? Because Jack's a threatening, domineering control freak. This is not domination/submission, it's rape. As the following paragraph attests:
"It might not seem entirely consensual to a casual observer, but his body is welcoming me, holding me in. His back bows and he takes me even farther into him. He cries out again as I keep pushing, forcing him to my needs, my rhythm. Being inside Daniel is just so damn exciting that it's torture to go slow, but I know this is hurting and satisfying him at the same time."
Classic sociopathic behavior. Classic. And the author doesn't even see it, which is very worrying. All "gentlemen" rapists see what they want to see. Their victims experience pain, show they don't want to have sex, but that's just a performance. They're lying. They do want to be bruised and beaten up and fucked. The rapist never ever thinks of this act as rape. His partners *want* what he gives them. The rapist needs to feed his fantasy and no action by his chosen victim will deter him. The pain isn't real because it's really the pain of being a virgin to his advances. They should be proud to be servicing their dominant partner.
Daniel isn't feeling pleasure at all during this "sex act." And it tells us that he does not *want* Jack inside him. The fact that he's allowing it to happen anyway shows how scared he is of Jack--and it's easy to see, given the fact that this man named Daniel is as dumb as a box of hammers. The author is trying to convince us otherwise but she's only fooled herself, not us.
Jack describes Daniel pulling his cock further into his ass, and Jack is surprised and thrilled by this, fucking him harder. Daniel climaxes with an "anguished cry." Now, is Jack coming because Daniel came? Nope. He's not finished. He continues fucking him, taking Daniel's soft dick in hand to stroke him at the same time. And then...
"His head is lying to the side and I'm not entirely sure he's even conscious anymore. Then I feel him harden and I realize he's trying to come back. Even tired and in pain, he's trying to give me what I want."
So not only is Jack willing to fuck him while he's in pain, but unconscious as well. At this point, I'm ready to believe he'd have used the date rape drug on Daniel if Daniel hadn't submitted to his twisted authority.
Now, Jack's getting off on how Daniel's just lying there in shock and pain, and describes how he likes that Daniel is somehow hard again, ready for more pain and pleasure. This gets Jack off and he comes. When he slips out of Daniel's ass, he notes that Daniel "has to be relieved." Another indication that a) Daniel didn't like getting fucked, and b) Jack knew it.
Jack ignores this though and tries to cuddle, and of course, Daniel resists as much as he's able, which is not much. Shock and pain, you know. Jack's thinking of fucking Daniel again when the loop ends and restarts for the last time. And the author replays the last scene of Window of Opportunity so that we're led to believe that that lecherous grin on that Jack O'Neill's face isn't about kissing Sam without her knowledge but raping Daniel without his knowledge.
That this author perceives Jack O'Neill in this way is disturbing. Who'd do that to the character and have any respect for him, or men in general? The Jack I know is a kind, considerate leader and he is nowhere to be found in this story. Of course, neither is confident, strong-willed Daniel.
Ignorance and cruelty are the obvious themes of this story, and it's easy to see that the author hasn't done her research, nor has she learned anything. She repeats the same mistakes and offenses in her other fiction. I'm left wondering which characters this author actually likes because the answer is a bloody mystery.
