A long stretch in bed was her biggest indulgence the first thing in the morning. Something about moving her muscles before she'd even opened her eyes properly made her feel good.
Emily rolled out of bed and began her morning routine. It was Tuesday. And on Tuesdays, when she wasn't in the field, her routine was to drink some milk, start her coffee maker, and get the bus down to the C&O canal to go for an early morning run.
The early spring was glorious along the canal. The spicebush was just coming into bloom, and the birches and paperbark maples stood out against the dark woods of the other trees. In another week or two, the dogwoods would be out and Spring would be here in earnest.
Emily smiled to herself as she reached her halfway point and turned to come back down the path. She'd never particularly thought of herself as a "joys of Spring" person. If you asked her, she'd tell you Autumn was her favorite time of year. The coolness, especially after the sweaty heat of a DC summer, the good food, the new lecture and theater schedules made Autumn a pleasant and exciting time of year.
This year, something had happened. God, she hated being a cliché, but falling in love had changed her.
Not in any major ways: for instance, Emily was still cranky if she didn't get enough sleep. It didn't matter if the reason was the lovely one of having a lean strong body thrusting deep inside her; sleep was important and lack of it made her crabby.
She reached her end point and stretched out before grabbing the bus back home. The phone rang nearly as soon as she got in the door.
"JJ? Yeah. … I just got home so I need to shower and get dressed. ... Sure ... Does Reid have a ride? If not, I can swing by and get him since I'm closer than the rest of you."
She listened for a moment. "That's fine then. Have him call me as soon as you've briefed him. I'll see you at the airstrip in two hours."
Grabbing a cup of coffee, she waited for the phone to ring.
Emily picked it up before the first ring had finished. "Doctor Reid, I presume?" She smiled. She felt like she always smiled when she spoke to him these days. "Am I coming to get you on my way out of town?"
"No. I've been up for hours. I had an idea on that case in Montana and woke up early to do some research. I thought I'd get a cab to your place, and we could leave together -- save us a little time."
"I know JJ would appreciate that," Emily said.
"If I stop at Pain Quotidien, would you like a suisse or a koek au beurre?"
Emily laughed. "Your accent is terrible you know. I'd like a suisse, please. I'm going to get in the shower now, so I can be sure to be out by the time you get here. Prevent temptation."
"Nothing prevents that. Maybe I should have stayed last night." His voice was low and went through her body making her shiver.
"Maybe you should have. I'm just nervous they'll find out." Emily left, "And I don't want this to end," unspoken.
"Go shower. I'll be there with pastries by the time you need a towel." He hung up.
Emily smiled at the phone then went up to shower, coffee cup in hand. In two hours, she'd be on a plane to Alabama investigating the bombing of a synagogue. In under an hour, a beautiful man would greet her with kisses and pastries. Sometime before they left the house, she would clip on her gun and everyone, including her lover, would refer to her as Prentiss.
For right now, though, she was Emily, and she was in love with Spencer Reid.
